The history of Burberry watches
Established in 1856 by Thomas Burberry when he opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. He trained as a draper. In 1879 he introduced gabardine which was a water-resistant fabric. In 1901 the knight logo with the Latin word Prorsum meaning forwards was developed and trademarked in 1909. Initially known as ‘Burberrys’ as in ‘Burberrys of London’ in 1999 it revered back to Burberry.
Burberry clothing became the choice for many explorers of the time. Roald Amundsen,[6] who was the first man to reach the South Pole, and Ernest Shackleton, who led a 1914 expedition to cross Antarctica and George Mallory on his attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1924.
The now-famous lining was brought in in the 1920s. Burberry remained in the control of the family until 1955 until it was purchased by Great Universal; Stores.
During the 1970s and 80s, the brand expanded its range into suits, trousers, shirts, sportswear, accessories, for men, women, and children. They now have branded sunglasses, fragrances, jewellery and watches.
