The history of Barbour watches
Celebrating its 125th Anniversary in 2019, Barbour is a brand known for its country-style and quality. Beginning in 1894, the company made oilskins for the local mariners in South Shields, on the River Tyne in the South East of England. The founder, John Barbour, originated in Scotland, and when he travelled to South Shields, he saw the need for waterproof clothing.
During WWI Barbour made clothing for the Britsh military. Malcolm Barbour, John’s son, joined in 1908 and developed a mail-order catalogue for the brand. Although he wanted to be a journalist, he worked for his father. It was this catalogue that enabled the brand to become international. In 1936 Duncan, Malcolm's son produced the first motorcycle suit. The submarine services used a variation of this suit during WWII.
In 1964 John Barbour joined the business, and it was his mission to reintroduce country wear, and he designed the iconic Durham jacket. Dame Margaret Barbour obtained 3 Royal Warrants.
Today Dame Margaret Barbour Helen Barbour continue to help the brand to grow and develop specific tartan with tartan specialists as a nod to their Scottish ancestry.
Their watches take inspiration from the clothing that they famous for internationally.
