The history of Arnold & Son watches
John Arnold was born in Cornwall is 1736. His father was a watchmaker, and after working with his as an apprentice, he moved to the Netherlands to continue his teachings. In 1762 he opened his first shop in London and immediately gained recognition for his work. In 1764 he presented his work to King George III, a ring containing a half quarter repeater. In 1772 for his expedition around the Pacific, Captain Cook chooses to take the Arnold no. Three chronometers on the voyage. A year later he developed the first pocket chronometer and that same year Captain Phipps takes an Arnold chronometer on his expedition to the North Pole. The term chronometer was coined by Arnold and is still used today when describing an accurate measure of time.
In Arnold’s son, John Roger Arnold studies watchmaking in Paris under the leadership of Arnold’s friend Abraham-Louis Breguet. In 1796 John-Roger and his father joined forces and became Arnold and Son and started supplying the Royal Navy.
In 1799 John Arnold passed away.
In 1808, in memory of his father John Arnold, Abraham-Louis Breguet presented his son, John Roger, with his first tourbillon escapement. He mounted it on one of Arnold's first pocket chronometers, with a personal inscription. This can still be viewed today at the British Museum.
John-Roger Arnold died in 1843, and the watchmaking business was purchased by Charles Frodsham.
It wasn't until 1995 that the brand Arnold & Son was re-launched in Switzerland. In 2010 all of the movements started to be produced in house. In 2016 John Arnold's 23/78 Chronometer set a world record at Sotheby's Auction with a price of £557,000 GBP (USD 722,318).
The timepieces today remain faithful to John Arnold and John Roger Arnold’s precision.
