The history of A.Lange & Sohne watches
The brand was first named in 1868 when Richard Lange becomes an official partner in his father Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s watchmaking company, joined in 1871 by Richard's brother Emil.
The brand as we know it today, was developed by Walter Lange, Emil’s grandson. Walter was born in 1924, living in Glashütte, the birthplace of the German watch industry and his family’s history of watchmaking, maybe his future was inevitable. He knew from an early age that he wanted to continue this tradition. In 1941 he travelled to Karlstein in Austria to attend a prestigious watchmaking school. However, world events meant that his plan was changed. He was able to complete his studies, but the A. Lange & Söhne building was destroyed in 1945 and the brand vanishes.
It was not until 1990 that Walter Lange realised that A. Lange & Sohne could be reborn. Together with the successful watch manager Günter Blümlein, the company is reborn. In 1992 they filed their first patent, the outsize date, which becomes a hallmark of the brand and appears on many of their watches.
In 2001 the company moved back to their original site in Glashütte.
