How to look after jewellery

We often get asked how to look after jewellery and so we have complied a list of the tips to keep your jewellery looking its best.

Enjoy wearing your jewellery

Jewellery is there to be worn and enjoyed, but looking after it well will ensure it looks better for longer. Remove jewellery when applying any creams or perfume.

White Gold

White gold rings, chains, bracelets and earrings are plated with rhodium, a shiny white metal. Over time this rhodium plating wears off. The only way to get your white gold jewellery looking like new is to have it rhodium plated. Depending on how often you wear your jewellery and what the item is, (rings for example will wear quicker) the rhodium plating should last about 2-3 years.

Silver Jewellery

Silver tarnishes and so needs to be cleaned regularly, with silver cleaning dip or cloth. When cleaning check all links and fastenings. If anything does need soldering, this should be done as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

Cleaning Pearls

Pearls are beautiful and extremely delicate and so must be cared for accordingly. After wearing your pearls, gently wipe them with a dry cloth to remove any residue of cream, perfume, sweat. Make sure you do wear them as the natural oils from your body will maintain their moisture. However, do not get them wet or during any activity that will make you perspire more than normal (eg at the gym). Avoid fake tan and hairspray. Once a year we recommend that you have them professionally cleaned.

Diamonds need cleaning regularly to keep them looking their best. You can clean them in warm water (not boiling) with a bit of washing up liquid. Use a soft toothbrush to get into the nooks and crannies. When cleaning check the claws are still in place. If these become loose your diamond could be damaged or even be lost, so make sure you get it repaired.

Gold Jewellery

Gold rings, gold chains, gold bracelets can all be cleaned in the same way. You can use warm water and washing up liquid. There are many gold cleaners available, such as polishing cloths and dips and they are very good. Most are suitable if your gold jewellery contains precious gems but please check the packaging before you use. Do not rinse the cleaning solution off over a drain and dry with a soft cloth. Nothing however compares to gold jewellery being professionally cleaned.

Similar to gold jewellery, platinum rings, platinum chains, platinum bracelets, platinum earrings can all be cleaned using jewellery cleaner, or even warm water and washing up liquid. Make sure all jewellery is completely dry before wearing.

After wearing make sure you place your butterflies firmly on your earrings. For high value earrings, we recommend screw-backs and they are more secure than a normal butterfly.

Storing Pearls

Always store pearls in a silk purse lying down, away from other jewellery. Do not hang them up as this will damage the tread. Your thread should be checked regularly in case re-stringing is required.

Storing jewellery

Although it seems very obvious, storing your jewellery correctly can save unnecessary breaks. Ensure that chains and bracelets are kept separate so that they don’t tangle together. Precious stones should be kept separately to ensure no damage is caused.
