HOW TO KEEP YOUR BAUME & MERCIER WATCH WELL MAINTAINED?

If you look after your Baume & Mercier watch it will be valuable to you for a lifetime. Like most pieces of jewellery, it is important to send them away for maintenance and repair.  At Repairs By Post we have years of experience fixing Baume & Mercier watches and have learned from the mistakes of others. Here is a list of things to avoid when wearing a Baume & Mercier watch.

TEMPERATURE

Baume & Mercier watches should not be exposed to extreme temperatures (above 60ºC/140ºF, or below 0ºC/32ºF). Extreme temperatures could damage the watches structure and may reduce the service life of the battery and affect the liquidity the watches lubricants. Both Baume & Mercier mechanical and quartz watches are delicate to severe changes in temperature, therefore, it is advised to avoid them as much as possible.

SPORTS

Baume & Mercier have suggested that whilst wearing their brand’s watch, users should remove them when playing sports. Accidents can happen at any time and this will reduce the chance of your timepiece needing to be sent away for watch repair.

It is recommended that a Baume & Mercier watch is removed during sports activities such as tennis, golf or mountain biking, as this will protect it from vibrations that could damage the watches internal movement.

CHEMICAL PRODUCTS

Remove you Baume & Mercier watch before touching any chemical products. Chemical products can damage fine jewellery which leaves many owners devastated.  Direct contact solvents and industrial/domestic detergents are not recommended. Like many pieces of jewellery avoid spraying cosmetics and perfumes around your timepiece – not only could this tarnish the metal but it could potentially damage the watch’s seals.

WATER RESISTANT BAUME & MERCIER WATCHES

Water resistant models should have their seals checked every 2 years. If you wear your watch while bathing, then this should be done annually to ensure it maintains its water resistance.

It is important that you check the water-resistance of your watch as it protects the movement from dirt, moisture and from any deterioration when immersed in water.  Baume and Mercier recommend that you have your watch serviced as like any watch the seals may be prone to wear and tear. Baume and Mercier recommend a water-resistance around every 12 months.

When your Baume & Mercier watch is submerged in water, do NOT pull out the winding crown or press the push buttons to change the date or start the chronograph. This movement could allow water to enter the case of the watch and could damage it.

If condensation starts to form it is advised that you contact as watch repair service to remove the condensation and renew the water-resistance of the watch.

REGULAR BAUME & MERCIER MAINTENANCE

If you would like your Baume & Mercier piece to stand the test of time it must be handled with some care and attention. Keep your watch’s original gleam, by sending it to Repairs By Post for regular maintenance. If your Baume & Mercier watch is water-resistant, it is advised that it is cleaned it with a soft dry cloth to preserve it from wear and tear. The metal bracelet and can also be gently cleaned with a dry brush which will eliminate dust that may arise on the timepiece.

Baume & Mercier watches are crafted with the resistance to withstand splashes of water. If your timepiece is immersed in sea water, in that case, it should be rinsed with a soft cloth soaked in tepid fresh water (making sure the crown is screwed down or pushed in) as this will release any salt deposits that may aggravate your skin.

1830

With a rich history in watch design, Baume & Mercier’s story began in 1830 with the founding of a family business. Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume launched their “Comptoir Horloger”, otherwise known as a watch dealership, in Les Bois.

Quickly, Baume & Mercier developed an excellent reputation within the industry by creating outstanding models with innovative design.

1851

The brand was keen to tackle foreign fields and set up a branch in London under the name “Baume Brothers”. This was just the start of the brand’s international expansion as they began to concur the British Empire, crossing: India, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Burma off of their list.

At the end of the 19th century, Baume and Mercier acquired a concrete international reputation which has made them one of the biggest watch brands in the world, still to this day.

1869

Louis- Victor was a pioneer in the female watch industry and sensed women’s interest in the watchmaking sector. Convinced, he gifted his daughter Mélina a gold pocket-watch in 1869.

During this period of time, the company was going from strength to strength making chronographs and grades complications, particularly minute repeaters, calendars, and tourbillons.

Due to the modernisation of their collection, Baume & Mercier won ten Grand Prix awards and seven gold medals at exhibitions across the globe, in cities like: Paris, Melbourne, Zurich, Amsterdam, London, and Chicago.

1918

And so it began, at the beginning of the 1920s in Genève, the company director William Baume joined forces with Paul Mercier and Baume & Mercier was formed.  in 1918. The firm had another boost in activity as they began to offer wristwatches that were remarkably balanced as well as special-shaped.

1940-1960

Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Baume & Mercier mixed classicism and modernity, reinventing the brand for the modern age. However, they didn’t move too far from their roots as they continue ti gain inspiration from the past in creating collections such as Capeland and Classima

Over this period the brand created some of their most renowned “Museum Collection” pieces which Repairs By Post can be sent, for vintage watch restoration.

  • 1940 – Column-Wheel Chronograph Watch
  • 1950 – Chronograph with Tachymeter and Telemeter Functions

After the 1970s, Baume & Mercier created creatively formed timepieces, including the Galaxie and Stardust models. Over 100 hundred years after their launch, the brand still enraptures the imagination which they began with.

1973

In 1973, Baume & Mercier predicted the changes which the watch industry and society as a whole would go through.  The Riviera was one of the first ever steel sports watches and in 1988, the firm collaborated with the Richemont group to enrich the collection.

2013

In 2013 the brand saw the launch of the 41 mm diameter, Clifton model which was inspired by a Baume & Mercier watch designs which dated back to the 1950s. This round cased wrist watch was born with thin, curved lugs and a traditional sun satin-finished silver-coloured dial with Arabic numerals.
